Getting Started

Once you are officially admitted to Illinois Institute of Technology and have registered for a distance learning course, you will begin your instruction using one of two delivery systems, TV or Internet via Blackboard (login via myIIT). The location type and section number that you select when registering identifies the delivery system of choice. Please review the student responsibilities after registering in an online course. If your course is an Online Internet course, you are also authorized to view or review the lectures and have access to associated materials on the Internet, in the same way and for the same duration as a remote Internet student. This is true if you are attending the class on an IIT campus, or at a remote TV site.

Your televised course begins on the same day and at the same time as the live campus section. See Getting Started With Televised Distance Learning.

Your Internet course is typically available 24-48 hours after the live course is delivered on the main campus. See Getting Started With Internet Courses for IIT Online.

Getting Started with Televised Courses

Students planning to attend a IIT public site or corporate site to view classes from IIT's campuses should familiarize themselves with the viewing room location, channel tuning instructions for the set-top box cabled to the TV monitor, the number to call for technical assistance and the classroom telephone number. The instructions for the set-top box are provided in the viewing room along with the telephone number for technical assistance. The class logo seen immediately prior to the start of class will provide this number as well, plus the on-campus broadcast room telephone number. If students have questions for the instructor, the telephone in the viewing room may be used to contact the classroom. The audio on the television set should be turned down. The instructor will signal when it is appropriate to make a comment or ask a question. The telephone should be hung-up at the completion of the call. For more informationon televised courses, refer to the overview of televised distance learning.

Examination Administration for Televised Courses

Students registered in these courses will take examinations at the location(s) designated by the course instructors. Some televised course instructors do require local area students to attend examinations on campus. Others allow students to take examinations remotely at the televised site where the student is registered. Proctors are required for all examinations and quizzes unless otherwise instructed by the faculty teaching the course. IIT Online Student Support Services coordinates examination dates and proctors with televised sites. For questions regarding this process, contact IIT Online Student Support Services or phone 312.567.3460.

In all cases, IIT reserves the right to qualify or disqualify exam proctors whether at televised sites or other remote sites.

Televised Receiving / Viewing Sites

A receiving site is a location where IIT has an agreement with a corporation, college or library to provide a viewing facility and other support required for students to participate in televised courses. Corporate sites are open to employees only. Public sites are open to all IIT students. These sites are equipped to receive a microwave signal that carries the course audio and video to a viewing room equipped with televisions, cable set-top boxes for tuning to IIT channels, telephones for phoning into the classroom, and headsets for listening (as appropriate).

A site also has a designated location where students can drop-off and pick-up course material, such as homework assignments, that will be exchanged with the IIT campuses by a designated courier. Some corporate sites may require students to express mail course materials directly to the IIT main campus. For more information about this requirement, contact IIT Online Student Support Services.

Getting Started with IIT Online Internet Courses

To view your Internet course, you will need to have RealPlayer on your computer. A link to the free download and instructions are available in the technical support and requirements section. To test your system readiness, you can try one of the IIT Online Demos.

Then, go to myIIT, log-in and click on Blackboard. Follow the directions at the myIIT portal if you do not have your username and password. Once you log-in, you will see the courses for which you have registered. Click on one of your Internet courses. Read the student responsibilities. Between 24-48 hours after the live class, you will see one or more camera icons. These are clickable, and once you enter your original username (UID) and original password (CWID), this will begin the streamed-video of your class. If available, there may be a .pdf link as well that allows downloading and printing slides of material from the class. There may be more than one camera icon; be sure to view all for each class as the video is broken into sections. If the live class meets twice a week, rather than once a week, there will be two dates and camera icons. Again, be sure to view all.

Courses are delivered via Blackboard, our course management system, accessible via myIIT. If you have problems with Blackboard or the videos, please contact the help desk at 312.567.DESK or supportdesk@iit.edu or see technical support. For more information about Internet courses, refer to the overview of Internet distance learning.

Examination Administration

Students are responsible for identifying the location of choice and appropriate contact at the testing center at least two weeks prior to the first examination date of a course. The location of the student and affiliation with a televised viewing site determines where examinations are administered for students registered in Internet courses.

Local students registered in Internet courses who are not affiliated with an existing televised corporate site or who do not normally attend the Main, Moffett or Rice campuses should contact a local community college to make arrangements for testing and seek approval of the proctor from IIT at least two weeks prior to the administration of the examination. For approval, contact IIT Online Student Support Services or phone 312.567.3460. Local students may be required, by the course instructor, to attend examinations at Main or Rice campus or may request to have examinations administered at these campuses.

Local students within the Chicago Metropolitan Area who are affiliated with a televised corporate site take examinations at the location(s) designated by the course instructor. Some course instructors do require local area students to attend examinations on campus. Others allow students to take examinations remotely at the televised corporate site where the student is registered. Proctors are required for all examinations and quizzes unless otherwise instructed by the faculty teaching the course. IIT Online Student Support Services coordinates examination dates and proctors with televised corporate sites. For questions regarding this process, contact
IIT Online Student Support Services or phone 312.567.3460.

Local students registered in Internet courses using the Main, Moffett or Rice campus sites take examinations at the respective campus. For questions regarding this process, contact IIT Online Student Support Services or phone 312.567.3460.

Long distance Internet students outside the Chicago Metropolitan Area are required to identify acceptable proctors in their local area and seek approval of the proctor from IIT at least two weeks prior to the administration of the examination. For approval, contact IIT Online Student Support Services or phone 312.567.3460. A community college testing center is an ideal choice for students in the United States .
