Live Television and Internet Courses
IIT Online students earn credit for degrees and certificates in the same way as students attending classes on campus. Courses are offered via two delivery modes: live television and the Internet.
Overview of Televised Distance Learning
Televised distance learning at IIT allows students to view course lectures at selected corporate and public sites around the Chicago Metropolitan Area. These courses are typically offered for three credit hours (one credit hour is equivalent to one fifty minute lecture period per week) and meet for a 16-week semester on the same academic calendar as on-campus courses.
Televised courses are typically live broadcasts that provide the student with an opportunity to phone into the classroom during course lectures. A telephone number airs before each lecture begins. Students use this phone number to phone into the classroom with questions during the lecture. A smaller number of courses are delayed broadcast at a day or time when the class is not meeting. There are also rebroadcasts of selected courses that air on a previous day or time. In either case, students typically communicate with the course instructor by email.
When registering for televised courses the student selects a viewing site that is both convenient and open to the student. This information provides IIT Online Student Support and the course instructor with the needed information to coordinate services, examinations and proctors. Corporate sites are open to employees only. Public sites are open to any IIT student. It is critical that students carefully select the correct site when registering and officially change registration to a new site when appropriate.
Many courses may have a Blackboard page, accessible via myIIT, where instructors will communicate course information to enrolled students. For information on taking televised courses, refer to Getting Started with Televised Distance Learning.
Overview of Internet Distance Learning
Internet distance learning at IIT allows students to view course lectures and download course materials from the World Wide Web. Currently, courses offered are typically graduate level academic courses. A limited selection of undergraduate academic courses may be available. Each academic department determines the availability of courses and establishes policies regarding undergraduate student access to these courses. For more information
contact the academic department of interest or IIT Online Client Services.
Distance learning courses are typically offered for 3 credit hours (one credit hour is equivalent to one fifty minute lecture period per week) and meet for a 16-week semester on the same academic calendar as on-campus courses (lectures are available within 48 hours of the live on-ampus lecture delivery). Short courses in special topics may also be offered on an abbreviated lecture schedule. Students are required to take examinations following the same schedule as on-campus students.
Examinations are typically administered at local community college testing centers for students in the United States. For information on taking Internet courses, refer to Getting Started with Internet Distance Learning.
